backs to basics osteopathic practice - welcome | Osteopaths will tell you that Osteopathy is about more than alleviating back pain or treating sports injuries. At Backs to Basics Osteopathic Practice, we believe in treating the whole person.
That goes for the lifestyle of the patient as much as for the body. By taking this holistic approach to analysing the habits, exercise, diet and health of the individual, a programme of self-help can be put in place for a lifetime of well-being.
With experience in a wide range of complementary therapies, Back to Basics can help you unleash the potential for wellness that is within.
Modern life does not lend itself to healthy living and in most cases it takes a determined effort to change ingrained habits that can affect our health, and ultimately our quality of life. Backs to Basics specialises in giving the support and help needed to make that change. |

backs to basics osteopathic practice - osteopathy | Originally developed in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still and used mainly as a means of treating disease. Still believed that if the body was functioning correctly, or Ãas God intendedÃ, that he could cure most disease processes by adjusting and manipulating joints and surrounding tissue for healthy nerve and blood flow.
Still was driven by the death of his three children from spinal meningitis, to provide an alternative to the recognised medical care of his time.
Today osteopaths are mainly perceived as Ãback specialistsÃ, and although this may be true due to the large percentage of people with back problems that we see, osteopaths can and do treat many other conditions including:- Headaches
- Joint pain
- Stress related problems
- Sports injuries
- Digestive problems
- Asthma
- Babies and children

backs to basics osteopathic practice - naturopathy | Naturopaths believe that if the body is given the right conditions it will heal itself. This means that the symptoms of disease (high temperature for instance) should not be repressed but allow to express themselves to allow the body to regain optimum health.
Naturopaths use many approaches such as dietary changes, fasting, hydrotherapy, Osteopathy and advice on supplements. They can help with many problems including:- Irritable bowel
- Eczema and skin conditions
- lethargy and low energy
- Food intolerances
- Weight problems
- Many other complaints

backs to basics osteopathic practice - cranial osteopathy | Developed by William Garner Sutherland in the early 1920Ãs. Sutherland believed that the bones of the skull must have some movement due to their structure, and that tissues of the body have their own, involuntary motion. This motion, he proposed, could be palpated and used as a means of detecting dysfunction, then manipulated to help healing and repair. Originally a student of Andrew Taylor Still, Sutherland eventually arrived at his theory of Cranial Osteopathy after performing various experiments on himself.
However, SutherlandÃs predominently mechanistic theory of cranial work gradually evolved into a more biodynamic, healing philosophy. This was due to the many palpatory and clinical experiences that occurred during treatment sessions, which could not be explained on a mechanistic level.
There are many explanations of Cranial Osteopathy, but no definitive explanation of how it works. it is most probably energy work, an interaction of patient and practitionersà bio-electric fields. It works on a physical, emotional and psychological level. In a practical sense however, there are no levels, just a whole integrated, individual therapy. |
backs to basics osteopathic practice - lifestyle & exercise advice | During most treatments, patients will receive advice on exercise and lifestyle if needed, or wanted. Beliefs ’In a real sense, all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality.’ Rev Martin Luther King |
